Fraud Loss by Dollar Amount and Type 2018

According to data from the The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), the #1 type of fraud by total dollar loss was Confidence Fraud/Romance Fraud in 2018 for a total of nearly $204 million. Second on the list was BEC/EAC fraud (Business Email Compromise/Email Account Compromise) for nearly $193.5 million. BEC/EAC fraud involves wire fraud scams, a multi-billion dollar type of fraud on the rise. Investment fraud ranks third at $175 million in 2018.

These are 2018 cyber crime statistics in the U.S. from the 50 states.

Note: “No Lead Value” is a category used when the FBI doesn’t have enough information to properly categorize the type of cyber crime.
